What will we do
Love architecture ? Me too. It is so satisfying to translate the lines, angles and planes of buildings we love into stitch. Or make one for a loved one. My love of architecture translates into stitched maps sprinkled with personally significant buildings. The image here shows a detail of the storymap I was commissioned to make for London’s iconic store Liberty’s by Liberty Oriental Carpets. Join me for this 1 day course where I will teach how to use hand embroidery in a creative way and will share techniques I use within my work.
The course is suitable for beginners and experienced embroiderers. You will learn to use a variety of stitches to translate your favourite buildings into stitch.
Where will the course take place
The workshop will be help at my studio in Bloomsbury, Central London. The studio building is buzzing with creative energy with over 70 artists and makers from jewellers, potters to milliners working here. This is a unique opportunity to take an intimate behind the scenes at my works in progress, tools and equipments I use daily and browse through my collection of design and art books.
What you need to bring along
All materials are included. You can stitch a single building or an entire skyline, it is entirely up to you. You can choose to use original design templates I have developed for the course or alternatively, bring your own architectural drawings/tracings to use as starting points for your embroidery. I will be in touch with you well in advance of the course to help you with choice of buildings.

Here’s what my happy students say
“Thank you for an absolutely wonderful class! It was truly inspiring. You made us all feel, not only welcome, but immediately filled with confidence – so that we could get on and stitch. And by the end of the class I felt that I had really learned and achieved so much in such a short space of time.”
Teresa Borsuk, AJ Woman Architect of the Year. London
"If you want a day of pure escape, creativity and yummy food, make this the one! Ekta was so welcoming and I walked away feeling that I’d learned absolutely loads and loads! I love my map and can’t wait to have it framed."
"What a wonderful experience- to share stories of place and belonging while learning from Ekta. It was a fantastic day! Thank you for the delicious lunch. Your work is inspirational."
"I so enjoyed the course – it was really well structured and delivered in a way that was supportive, encouraged confidence and crucially – was hugely inspiring. I went home, my head buzzing with ideas and have already managed to carve out some time to do some hand stitching embellishment (place names) and dust off my sewing machine – just to be check that I could do free embroidery – ( I can)! You are a very talented artist and a great communicator. Thank you."
"What a lovely day spent in the beautiful studio of Ekta Kaul, learning to embroider maps under her encouraging guidance. Privileged to spend time under the tutelage of an experienced and passionate artist."
"I have wanted to learn more about free machine embroidery for a while. When I saw the workshop advertised on Ekta’s website I decided that I should have a go! Ekta’s work is very creative and of a very high standard (I bought one of her scarves last year!) I had seen some of her quilts at Art in Action and thought I could learn a lot from her. I wasn’t disappointed! Ekta is a very encouraging, enabling and skilful teacher. She is very patient and has a real sense of fun. I enjoyed the workshop tremendously, learnt lots of new skills and came away having started a piece of work that I now have the confidence and skills to complete!"
"I thoroughly enjoyed the course with Ekta, renewing my interest in sewing, yet doing something I had never done before ie machine embroidery. I decided to come to Ekta’s workshop because I so liked what she made for the Christmas Fair and I wanted to learn her techniques. I am close to retirement and am looking to spend time doing something creative, making items that are unique, attractive and useful and can be given as presents. I am so inspired I am now bidding on e-bay for a Bernina sewing machine!"
