Course Outline

Learn ways of creating playful patterns using stitch resist techniques with natural dyes. Under Ekta’s gentle guidance you will explore a range of techniques of using stitch to resist parts of your fabric and create dynamic patterns.  Techniques  drawn from Japanese Shibori and Indian Bandhani traditions will be explored. You will learn to dye with a natural dye which does not need a mordant or any specialist equipment.

Materials

Materials pack will be sent to the participants. This will include medium weight cotton suitable for hand dyeing, strong thread, needles and a food dye which will not require any specialist equipment to use at home. Participants will need access to a saucepan for boiling  cloth bundles, a kettle and a hob/electric plate. Instructions on the techniques and dyeing at home will be provided during the workshop. You can also bring along onion skins, avocado skins along.

Where will the course take place

This virtual masterclass will be held on Zoom. A link to the class will be sent to you. You will need access to a laptop/tablet with a camera and microphone.

About your tutor Ekta Kaul 

Ekta is an established textile artist and a highly experienced educator. She creates ‘StoryMaps’ – narrative embroidered maps that explore place, history and belonging through stitch.  Ekta’s work is held in several public and private collections including the Crafts Council’s , Liberty London’s and Gunnersbury Museum’s permanent collections.  You can see her work at a select group of galleries in the UK and internationally including The New Craftsmen, Contemporary Applied Arts, Museum of Art and Design NYC, Conran Shop Tokyo among others. Ekta loves to share her skills and 20 year’s worth of experience at embroidery Masterclasses at museums including Victoria & Albert Museum, Kettles Yard, Leighton House Museum amongst others.
