Embroider Your Favourite Words, Phrases & Handwriting of Loved Ones
Words carry memory, emotion, and meaning. In this gentle yet expressive masterclass, you’ll explore how embroidery can transform cherished texts—favourite quotes, meaningful phrases, or even a loved one’s handwriting—into powerful works of art.
From historic samplers to contemporary stitched narratives, text has long found its place in needlework. Together, we’ll honour that lineage while making it your own. You’ll be guided through techniques to bring language to life in thread, creating stitched pieces that are both personal and poetic.
You will learn several techniques from couching to raised satin stitch which are suitable for tackling text and also learn techniques that I use in my own work for handwriting.
What you’ll learn:
Techniques for stitching letters, from simple to sculptural
How to plan and transfer text onto fabric
Ways to embroider handwriting and cursive script
Creative ideas to personalise your work with meaningful words
This session is open to all levels. Whether you’re new to stitching or a seasoned embroiderer, come discover the joy of word-smithing with thread.

About Me, your creative guide
I’m Ekta Kaul, an artist who finds joy in exploring themes of place, history, and belonging through the art of narrative embroidery and abstract painting. Over the past 18 years, I’ve honed my craft as a full time artist, with my works acquired for the permanent collections of esteemed institutions like the Museum of London and the Crafts Council. My book, Kantha, published by Bloomsbury UK, celebrates the rich traditions of this art form. Alongside my work as an artist, I regularly collaborate with world-class institutions, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, to share my passion for stitch with students from around the world.
